Best Companies to Work For

Organizations that Go the Extra Mile for Their Employees

Sarah Cutler and Di Lewis

December 1, 2012

Keeping your company moving full speed ahead can be tough during today’s bumpy economy. As our 2012 Best Companies to Work For demonstrate, keeping your employees happy and healthy is key to keeping your company on the road to success. In our annual Best Companies to Work For program, we searched the state looking for companies that treat their employees right. These companies encourage top performance with unique benefits, recognition programs, educational opportunities and more. They keep their employees happy by hosting regular parties, offering competitive salaries and scheduling time to have fun. These companies truly value their employees—and it shows. Join us in celebrating the 2012 Best Companies to Work For, companies that go the extra mile for their employees.

The Selection Process
Each of the companies featured in the following pages went through a rigorous, two-part survey process. First, a company executive was required to answer questions related to the company’s benefits and policies. Second, a percentage of employees were surveyed about the company’s benefits and compensation, career development opportunities, culture and environment, and management processes. Responses were scored and the top companies from four categories—micro, small, medium and large—were named the 2012 Best Companies to Work For.

Neutron Interactive
Neutron Interactive gives every employee the opportunity to excel. As one employee says, “Neutron creates an atmosphere that allows you to ‘create your own job,’ somewhat. Once you’re on board it’s up to you to let them know what your skill sets are and how/where you would like to apply them. They will let you go as far as your imagination can take you.”

The company also promotes a culture that enables team members to thrive on and off the job. Another employee explains, “Neutron is great at sending us to conferences we want to attend to enhance our personal development and recharge batteries.”

Neutron executives work to make the workday fun. The company provides free lunch every day, unlimited snacks and drinks, in-office yoga twice a week, and free health insurance. It recently completed a remodel that includes a slide and a ping-pong table. “I’ve never worked at a company that cares so much about culture…we are constantly having competitions as a company that promote networking and creativity.”

Neutron Interactive is an online marketing company.

BrainStorm, Inc.
Almost every employee at BrainStorm mentions the same three things that make them love their jobs: high company ethics, flexibility and autonomy, and a good culture with coworkers who are more like family. Desiree Voight, senior manager, says the company makes culture a priority because “happy and engaged employees work harder and smarter and in general are just more fun to be around.”

Management is easy to talk to and gets to know everyone. One employee says, “They feel like they are just another employee trying to make the team better. You don’t feel that they are better than you. They are not worried about their titles.”

Employees also get to enjoy good benefits, many company parties and events, season passes to a variety of local activities, a game room, fully stocked fridge and candy box, time off between Christmas and the New Year, and money from the company to give to a charity of choice.

BrainStorm provides enterprise-level software and training.

Castle & Cooke Mortgage, LLC
Most Castle & Cooke Mortgage employee reactions could be summed up in one employee’s comment: “I am very proud to be here and brag often. Even better, when people hear where I work and recognize the company, I always hear how great we are and how we take care of our clients. You can’t beat that.” Most employees are equally enthusiastic—a theme running through all comments was a love for the family-like relationship among coworkers.

Employees also rave about the open-door policy with management, many saying President Matthew Pineda knows the employees and asks about what’s happening in their jobs and lives. In addition to the comfortable work environment, Castle & Cooke Mortgage has a strong benefits package that got glowing reviews, an emphasis on the importance of work-life balance, quarterly profit-sharing bonuses and an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii for the year’s top performers.
