“Instead of the typical ‘carrot and stick’ style of leadership, our founders lead by example and champion achievement in a way commensurate to the individual’s place of progress at the time.”
Grant Victor wants its employees to know they’re valued. Each month the company has something they call TGIFFL, which stands for “Thank Goodness It’s Free Lunch Friday.” Employees enjoy a catered lunch and individual achievements are recognized.
Grant Victor supports employees’ additional education and training, including arrangements with the Davis Applied Technology College. “Grant Victor has a philosophy of being a family of companies run by a company of families,” says one employee. “Truly Grant Victor is the best company I have worked for in my life.”
The company is frequently involved in charitable efforts, including the Dirty Dash, which supports The Road Home, as well as Angel Tree. This year Grant Victor plans to make contributions toward the building of a school in Kenya.
Lendio attracts ambitious, hardworking people. One employee says his favorite benefit at Lendio is “being around very bright, driven and passionate people that are experts in their respective niches.” Many employees describe a corporate culture of respect with leaders who encourage—and reward—autonomy and creativity.
“The culture at Lendio is great,” says another employee. “Most office spaces have a very tight ship about when you can and can’t work. However, at Lendio if you and a colleague are feeling tired, stressed or not motivated, they encourage you to take a 10 to 15 minute break—play some ping-pong, take a walk around the building or simply take a nap. I walk into work every day knowing that people are excited to see me.”
“If you work hard and show your worth, you have the ability to go very far with Lendio and enjoy a comfortable salary at the same time. It’s a great place to work and provides a fun atmosphere to come to every day.”
If nothing else, Lucid Software employees are well fed. There is “lots of free food all of the time,” says one worker. “Apart from food, it comes down to the team,” says another employee. “Everyone is at the top of their game here.”
The company hosts an annual retreat for employees. “This year we rented a bus and took our 50-plus employees to Red Fish Lake, Idaho for three days of playing on the lake, biking and river running. We’re still enjoying laughs and memories from our time spent there,” says another employee. “We also have a company soccer team, roof top barbecues and quarterly off-site events. Each team has a budget to spend on any team-building activities they wish. At Lucid, we really do love hanging out with one another.”
“I have complete autonomy over my work streams, and I alone am responsible for the success/failure of my projects. I have grown more in this role at Lucid Software than in any of my previous companies combined.”
As an accounting firm, Mantyla McReynolds has a very busy and stressful tax season each year. But the company does everything it can to minimize the impact of that busy time. For example, for most of the year, employees only work half days on Fridays. “I really enjoy the approach that Mantyla McReynolds takes with production hours and adjusting office hours during the off season. It makes the busy season not so bad when it pays off for the rest of the year,” says one employee.
“Management pays out the overtime we work during the busy seasons as bonuses quarterly. There are also a variety of other incentive programs to encourage employees to bring in new clients and recruit new staff,” explains another worker.
“Mantyla McReynolds has an amazing culture compared to other public accounting firms that I have encountered. It may not seem so great when compared to a tech company with a game room, but that’s not a fair comparison to make. The fact is that public accounting is stressful and boring all at the same time. However, the partner group does its best to make this a great place to work.”
Employees of Penna Powers know how to have a good party. Many claim the company has “the best” Halloween party in town, and others mention the monthly summer barbecues, an annual Lagoon day and fun holiday party. “We work hard but we have a lot of fun together, too,” says one employee.
