Fast 50

September 2, 2014

Each year, the Utah Business Fast 50 program recognizes companies that aren’t content with “good enough.” They are a diverse set of businesses from a wide range of industries, but each has found ways to reach more customers, improve their products and forge new ground. The “fast” in Fast 50 describes not only their rapid growth, but also their ability to adapt to the quickly changing conditions that characterize the modern business world. Join us as we honor the companies that are accelerating the pace of business in Utah.

“Since the beginning, we have had the goal of becoming a billion-dollar company. Once we decided that, our plans obviously extended beyond the next month, year or even decade. We have a vision of where we want to be and we’ve worked hard and smart toward it from day one.”

- Rodney Larsen, President & CEO, Zija International

“Scaling affects your business from top to bottom—from a product, server, employee standpoint—it comes up everywhere. But we really bought into this ‘nail it, then scale it’ mentality. Meaning that scaling a business is much easier when you’ve actually nailed the product and know where you’re going.”

- Ryan Smith, CEO, Qualtrics

“In a rather stagnant industry in regards to innovation, we have been able to create products that nobody else has dreamed of. … We do everything in house, everything from manufacturing to marketing is done right here in Utah and that has given us a huge competitive advantage. We move fast, and have impeccable quality.”

- Joshua Waldron, CEO, SilencerCo

“The strength that comes with being one of the larger and more stable companies in our industry is that we can endure challenges that come our way together, as a family, with the ups and downs inevitable in business.”

- Dave Wentz, CEO, USANA Health Sciences

“We experienced triple-digit growth in 2013, and we expect to see the same in 2014. Historically, we’ve spent very little on sales and marketing; our clear value proposition drives our growth.”

- Aaron Skonnard, President & CEO, Pluralsight

“With our growth have come changes to our strategies, to our own processes, to how we make decisions, and to how we are structured. As with most companies who make changes, we have had to think about the natural behavior changes that follow. Since that’s our line of work—behavior change—we have been careful to look at both the above-the-line changes (strategy, structure, process, systems) and the below-the-line behavior changes required. We are used to watching for the behavior-based challenges that get in the way of achieving goals, and we have intervened in time.”
