Layton Construction Company celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Sixty years ago, Alan W. Layton left a job with the Bureau of Reclamation to start his own construction company. Using $1,600 of retirement savings from his government job, Layton started his home-based business that has grown to become a national leader in commercial construction.
Layton’s first big break came with the contract to build 17 offices for City Finance Company along the Wasatch Front and in Southern Idaho. A long history of school construction followed, and Layton completed more than 40 schools in Salt Lake, Granite, Jordan and Davis school districts.
In recent decades the company has completed high-profile work, including projects at Rice-Eccles Stadium, LaVell Edwards Stadium, Rio Tinto Stadium, Primary Children’s Medical Center, University of Utah Hospital, IASIS Medical Centers along the Wasatch Front and HCA MountainStar facilities. Layton has also built office buildings, manufacturing facilities, convention centers, resorts, museums, correctional facilities and retail centers.
In the late 1980’s, Layton expanded with the opening of a regional office in Phoenix, followed by other operations centers located from Hawai’i to Florida.
