Visit Salt Lake confirmed two annual meetings for the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America. Scheduled for November of 2021 and 2025 at the Salt Palace Convention Center, these citywide conventions are expected to attract about 6,000 attendees and generate more than $5.5 million in direct attendee spending each year. The events are scheduled further into the future than any other groups currently confirmed for the Salt Palace.
These three societies share a close working relationship and similar objectives. Society members are dedicated to the conservation and wise use of natural resources to produce food, feed and fiber crops while maintaining and improving the environment.
Because these conventions are large and occur in a generally slow time of year, competition to host them was exceptionally high. Visit Salt Lake assembled a compelling bid presentation featuring proposals from the large downtown hotels and the Salt Palace Convention Center. The bid also included information about Salt Lake's accessibility, attractions, dining, shopping, weather, safety, tax rates and post-convention vacation opportunities in Utah. Visit Salt Lake's convention sales director Chris Peterson and director of convention services Julie Rhoads, worked throughout a several-year sales process, which included site inspections and travel to the client's headquarters in Wisconsin. Other finalists included Baltimore, Charlotte and Vancouver.
