Utah Business Healthcare Heroes Honored

By Rachel Madison

October 9, 2013

Utah is home to a unique variety of Healthcare Heroes who go above and beyond to make life easier for their patients, create more efficient programs or just bring a smile to someone who needs it.

Each year, Utah Business honors a group of these Healthcare Heroes during an awards luncheon. On Tuesday, Utah Business presented 24 awards to individuals and organizations who are working to change the face of Utah’s healthcare industry for the better.

From a furry golden retriever named Bert to a retired member of the U.S. Air Force, this year’s Healthcare Heroes each felt humbled by the awards they received and many agreed that without their teams and families standing behind them, they wouldn’t be where they are today.

Keith Tintle, CEO of Timpanogos Regional Hospital and recipient of an administrative excellence award, said most of all, patients deserve the recognition.

“The word hero seems like such a misnomer because our patients are the real heroes,” he said.

Marty Malheiro, coordinator of outreach education at the Utah Poison Control Center and recipient of a community outreach award, spoke about her career being the love of her life, mostly because she’s able to help so many people.

“Anything I can do to help people in the state of Utah to live a happier and healthier life, I’m committed to it,” she said.

Dr. Mark Ott, medical director of the surgical services clinical program at Intermountain Healthcare and recipient of a healthcare practitioner (physician) award, said he has been fortunate in his career.

“I’m privileged to live in a state where healthcare matters more than in perhaps any other state,” he said.
