Utah Business Honors 2013 Best Companies to Work For

By Rachel Madison

December 13, 2013

Utah Business magazine honored 35 companies at its 2013 Best Companies to Work For awards luncheon Thursday. Many of the award recipients cited their company’s culture, leadership and employees as the reasons why they were one of Utah’s best places to work.

Brock Blake, co-founder and CEO of Lendio, said he knows that little of his company’s success depends on the executive team. Instead, he credits his employees for making Lendio a great place to work. Other executives echoed similar sentiments about their award-winning companies.

Michael Smith, director of human resources at Spillman Technologies, said he’s learned three things that make a company successful: “Happy employees create great culture, great culture creates happy employees and happy employees make for happy customers.”

Dan Macuga, chief communications officer at USANA Health Sciences, said his company’s culture was engrained in the company from the beginning. “Human capital is the most important investment any company can make,” he said.

Utah Business determines the Best Companies to Work For through a two-survey process. One survey is for a company’s HR/corporate department to complete, and the other is for the company’s employees to complete. The surveys ask questions about benefits and compensation, growth opportunities, company culture, management, etc. Once the surveys have been completed, the responses are scored based on point system and the highest-ranking organizations are deemed Best Companies to Work For.
