Utah Business Honors Women Leaders

Di Lewis

May 18, 2012

Women often do not do well enough at recognizing their own achievements, said MediConnect Global CEO Amy Rees Anderson. Programs that honor successful women help distinguish people in the community who may not seek the spotlight, she said.

It is in that spirit that Utah Business magazine held its 13th annual 30 Women to Watch luncheon Thursday afternoon.

Anderson said success in business “has everything to do with the people you choose to surround yourself with.” Find people who are supportive and full of ideas, not people who will hold you back, she said.

Kristen Cox, executive director of the Utah Department of Workforce Services, agreed saying people who have low expectations of others are doing them a disservice. As a person who is blind, Cox said she was glad to be surrounded by those who pushed her and expected a lot of her, when many people may not have done so.

Anderson also said it is key to be a mentor to other people to help them grow.

“It’s so critically important that, as a woman, when we achieve success to turn around and help others,” she said. “I encourage you to keep going and give back and surround yourself with greatness.”

As someone who had a lot of opportunities in life, Laura Scott, shareholder and vice president at Parsons Behle & Latimer, said she tries to give others those same chances to succeed that she was given.

Helping people find what they are great at and develop that is what keeps Joanna Barney going every day. “I get to help create powerful young women. I get to help build their confidence,” said Barney, executive director and director of coaching at Utah Avalanche and admin manager at Boise Cascade.

Ultimately helping others achieve their goals and find success is what makes the hard work worth it, she said.
